cheap dates make cents!

A Bid Adieu…

August 24th, 2010 · GREAT First Dates!

I loved being able to provide you Cheap Daters inexpensive and creative ideas for the last year or so. As you may have noticed, posts have been few the past month because my life travels have taken me out of the Cleveland area, my hometown. While I would love to continue the suggestions and events, taking time to learn my new home and its fun offerings has trumped my desire to continue this project. It shall remain on the Internet, however indefinite.

In my new city, I hope to continue my passion for the cheap with a similar site dedicated to the budget-conscious population. I would love to pass the reigns to someone who would give Cheap Date Cleveland the same love as I have — I never made any money here, as I only wanted to show you that Cleveland CAN be a fun, unique and exciting place for couples of all relationship statuses, ages, backgrounds and wallet size. Feel free to email me, if you are interested: dating@cheapdatecleveland.com

Cheers!

Harborfest starts TODAY!

July 7th, 2010 · Awesome Weekends, FREE!, Fairs & Festivals, GREAT First Dates!, Outdoor Date

I love this Cleveland event, and I’m thrilled for its return to our harbor.

Proof Rack Cards

FREE! Tall Ships Festival from July 7-10, with plenty of activities, boat tours and fun to last your next four days, located behind the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at the North Coast Harbor. Tonight, Parrots of the Caribbean (Buffet tribute band, natch) from 6-9pm. Farmers Market on Thursday (grab your lunch date!) with a steel drum band setting the mood. Live music, DJs on Friday and Saturday night. Bring a partner AND your dancing shoes.

Great non-cheap date idea: We will not cater to you ALL of the time, but sometimes it is fun NOT being a cheap date. Thesunset dinner cruise on the Nautica Queen during the Tall Ships festival is a definite exception (and definite Top Ten of my favorite date nights). While decidedly not “cheap” enough for our standards, it really is a fantastic way to celebrate a special occasion, if you got one.

It’s OK. A splurge on an amazing night out is welcome sometimes (and appreciated, if only for its unique and memorable qualities). And “cheap” is all relative, right?

Explore the Cleveland Metroparks Together!

June 10th, 2010 · Bike Date, FREE!, Outdoor Date

This is a great suggestion from Positively Cleveland about the WONDERFUL Metroparks that surround the Cleveland-Akron area. There are various events scheduled throughout the year at each reservation, from biking to hiking to outdoor movies and night nature hunts (awesome!). If you have pets, you can even WALK them together on any of the 60 miles of paved, all-purpose trails. Get out the bikes, grab the rollerblades, buy some steaks and stuff ‘em in a picnic basket too. If you just plan the date — you can do it (well not that) in some portion of the park’s 21,000 acres of land.

I’m giving you everything you need (together with Cleveland Plus) to make your next (or first) date more memorable.

Isn’t it about time you explored something together? Aside from each other, OF COURSE.

It’s the “I’m Hungryyyyyy” Date!

June 8th, 2010 · Creative Date Ideas, GREAT First Dates!, Happy Hour, One Time Event, Outdoor Date

6x9_horizontal

This Thursday, June 10th, join Cleveland Public Art (CPA), Zygote Press and Ohio City Near West for an event that won’t leave you hungry: Be a Nomad!

From 5:30 pm to 9 pm, Cleveland food cart vendors will feed artists and voyeurs alike in front of CPA’s Ohio City office on West 26th Street. That’s a Happy Hour AND a Dinner Date in ONE, lovers.

Zygote Press artists’ prints will be on display in CPA’s office gallery. Scratch that Double Date scenario, this is a triple-date-threat with a gallery visit as well. Be still my foodie-and-art-lovin heart.

West 26th Street will be closed so we can eat in the street! And I hear there’s a new foodie (sushi pop?!) truck in town, a collaboration between Dante restaurant in Tremont and Dim & Den Sum.

Might I recommend taking the bikes out for this fabulous mild weather week?

Cheap foodie eats, free fine art — this a yummy Cleveland date that makes perfect cents and sense!

Take a Hike. Err, WITH me, please.

May 12th, 2010 · FREE!, Month-long events!, Outdoor Date, Sightseeing, Touristy Dates

Explore a part of downtown with your better half! Take a Hike tours last just a little over an hour, with “guest appearances” by John D. Rockefeller, Frances Payne Bolton and Alan Freed. Impress upon your date your comprehensive Cleveland knowledge, but allow your guides to school you with a bit more  concise  local history. Do I smell a Trivial Pursuit challenge?

Bring it! Your walking shoes, that is…

Schedule your meet-up on any of the following days from May through September 12):

Tuesdays at 6pm –  PlayhouseSquare Tour / Meet at the State Theatre Lobby (1519 Euclid Avenue)

Thursdays at 6pm – Historic Gateway Neighborhood Tour / Meet at The Arcade (401 Euclid Avenue)

Saturdays at 10am – Historic Warehouse District Tour / Meet at Constantino’s Market (1278 West 9th Street)

Sundays at 10am – Canal Basin Park Tour / Meet at Settlers Landing RTA Station (1025 West Superior Avenue, bottom of the hill)
Tours are FREE! (but DCA welcomes your donations to fund future tours). Pending cooperating weather, visit one of downtown’s fantastic outdoor patios. Perhaps the newly-opened Metro Bar + Kitchen in the Warehouse District?

Update to Pajama (Jam) Party Night Bike Ride!

May 11th, 2010 · Bike Date, FREE!

I cannot tell you how geeked I was after reading this:

The turnaround at the ride’s halfway point will have games of “Spin the Water Bottle for Cycling Truth or Dare” and some yummy slumber party snacks like popcorn, cookies and Twizzlers!

LOVE! Bravo to whomever at Century Cycles or the Towpath Trail planned such a great date night. Like minded bike geeks (and their partners): the Pajama Party Night Ride begins at 8 this Saturday, May 15 in Peninsula.

I’ll be packing my glow-stick jewelry. I hear it complements my skin tone.

RAWR!

A Welcome Return to Bike Weather

May 1st, 2010 · Activity Date, FREE!, Fairs & Festivals, GREAT First Dates!, Live Music, Month-long events!, Outdoor Date, Sightseeing, Week-long events!

We consider bicycling to be the best threesome opportunity for any Cleveland date. As the month of May brings with it some gorgeous Northeast Ohio weather, we make whoopee with National Bike Month. And if you’re not interested, we know there’s someone else to take your place. Hmph. Better than being a third wheel.

Cleveland Bicycle Week is May 15-23. You can go ahead and block of the ENTIRE Saturday that week because we’ve already selected an entire day of date ideas for you and wheel horse.

An always-FREE! Saturday Social (10am) with the Ohio City Bike Co-op travels as a group on a sight-seeing joyride. Loaners bikes and helmets are available. Drink to River Day and the Cuyahoga River’s natural and historical landmarks — Mention Cleveland Bicycle Week for a FREE! coffee or juice. We don’t recommend getting drunk on the river water.

It’s the return of Walk+Roll (12-4pm). In coordination with the Kamm’s Corner Hooley (12-8pm), walkers, bikers and skaters alike are invited to take part of three events in one! The new Hooley festival on Lorain Avenue kicks off Cleveland Bicycle Week, with several blocks closed to motorized traffic. When the wheels and sneakers are put away, blow off some steam with a specially-crafted Kamm’s Lager (created by Akron’s Thirsty Dog) available at any Kamm’s Corner/West Park neighborhood bars or pubs.

Later Saturday (May 15; 7:30-10:00pm), is the Towpath Trail’s Pajama Party Night Ride. It’s never too early in a relationship for comfy pants — especially if you’ll be enjoying all twelve sweaty summer miles together. There will be cereal. Oh, yes. The perfect dessert to complete your date with the bikes.

Do you know how much we love FREE? Sláinte, Cleveland.
